Lawrence, Commanding Officer of the AAF Wing, who made the presentation to the P-38 Lightning pilot at this American base in Italy. Thompson, in receiving the highest airman's medal, was cited for "extraordinary achievement" as pilot of a P-38 in the Mediterranean Theatre of Operations. He has shot down one enemy plane in aerial combat.
