1st Fighter Group

Introduction

This site is under construction

Started as of April 1, 2010

This documentary has been assembled from archival material copied from the National Archives at College Park, MD.  It is meant as an index to over 5000 pages of original documentation of the achievements of the 1st Fighter Group prepared by the Group's headquarters onsite at its combat locations.

The site main page provides the 'pathfinder' to quickly access the compartments and individual elements of the assembled indices and copied documentation.

The primary narrative history of the 1st Fighter Group in action during WWII is to be found in John Mullins' fine book, "An Escort of P-38s" (Published by Phalanx Publishing Co., Ltd of St. Paul, MN)

John Mullins was with the 94th Fighter Squadron during 1944 and wrote the WWII history of the 1st Fighter Group after researching and writing a history of the 94th FS.  Robin Hansen, who joined the 71st Fighter Squadron at Chateau d'un in North Africa in March of 1943 added a fine access to 1st Fighter Group history via the website he created which collected a great deal of pictorial characterization of Group life in combat and narratives of experiences by the Group's personnel.

The 1st Fighter Group Association, established in the 1980's, is the organization that provides the fellowship for current and past members of the 1st Fighter Wing and its predecessor units.  The organization was originated by WWII veterans of the 1st Fighter Group and its squadrons (27th Fighter Squadron, 71st Fighter Squadron and 94th Fighter Squadron), but has welcomed and enlisted subsequent veterans and active duty members of elements of the 1st Fighter Wing.  I'm not sure the Association still exists.
